Speaking Truth to Power:
Series to Explore Bonhoeffer’s Lessons for Today’s World
St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Port Jervis will offer a five-part series exploring Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s spiritual and political life and its lessons for today’s world. The series will begin on Thursday, Feb. 26 and continue on four subsequent Thursdays.
When Hitler took power in Germany, Bonhoeffer, a young Lutheran pastor, made the decision to actively oppose the Third Reich and to distance himself from the churches that had acquiesced to the regime’s ideology. His spiritual and political journey--and the questions he raised in his writings about what it means to live in accordance with the Gospels—have particular relevance in today’s turbulent political climate.
Each session will begin at 6:30 pm at St. Peter’s, 31 West Main Street, Port Jervis, and will include a presentation by Pastor Lena Warren, followed by a discussion. It will begin with a look at Bonhoeffer’s early life and the situation in Germany, followed by the effect of the Black Church in Harlem on Bonhoeffer’s outlook, his efforts to create an opposition “confessing church,” his work in the anti-Nazi resistance, and his writings from prison.
The series is open to the public. For more information and a link to participate via zoom, go to www.stpeterspj.org/events.
